Resilient

UCAN sharing: Resilient

Scripture: 2 Cor. 4:6-10

33  These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.” Jn. 16:33

Tribulation: grievous trouble; severe trial or suffering.

There is a toy punching bag that when you hit it, it springs right back up. It goes down but never stays down. In the life we lead we too will have times when we are hit by life and we go down. Life circumstances can at times catch us off guard and send us seek for help. Many people never recover from the fall. Unable to find the hope that gives strength many will not pop up again but stay down. And of those who rise of their own strength they bear the marks of the battle on their souls. Marks that change the inner man and can make a person hard. In this context the power of God’s love shines out in to the darkness and fills the weary heart with the strength to rise and keep on. Truly we become more than overcomers when we trust in the Lord no matter how difficult the circumstance and know that His love is enough.

14  I have seen all the things that are done under the sun; all of them are meaningless, a chasing after the wind. Ecc. 1:14

Solomon wrote of life as being meaningless and empty when it is lived without God. Like him many others that followed have arrived at the same conclusion. Contemporary philosophers in their own lives have struggled with the reality that this life is meaningless. Life has no purpose and what we do is pointless because of who man is. Add to this the toil and unseen difficulties that arise in every life and it all seems overwhelming. In a heart that is facing what seems to be an unsurmountable situation like disease, lack of money, brokenness, failed relationships or death the weight of life can become more than one can bear. Peace and hope escape the person and their heart sinks deeper in to the darkness of despair. It is here that life seems to no longer matter. The multitudes daily look for ways to cope with the emptiness and heaviness of life. We turn to worldly pleasure and activities to numb the pain and emptiness. This is the truth of the life we all have to face.

It is no wonder that today more and more people are taking their own lives and deciding that this life is truly without meaning so why live it. We when reach for what we think will give life only to find that it does not, it leaves us worsted off than when we began. The false hopes of this world fail to fulfill and grow within us a sadness as we must face the reality of a meaningless life. Man can chase the wind as long as he wants but eventually even this ends. What does a person do when all they believe in fails? Ephesians 2 tells us that we all are dead in our sins as we live our carnal lives under the rule of satan. So it is no wonder life has no purpose, it was dead from the beginning. Can money, sensual pleasures, fame, earthly power fix the heart of man? If it could then those who have the most would be the best examples of life but they are not. So where does man turn to live and overcome?

In Jn 10:10 Jesus says that satan can only kill, steal and destroy. If we connect Eph 2:1-2 with this it means that all those who are outside of God are dead and being destroyed by their own choice. But Jesus didn’t end there he went on to say that He, Jesus the Christ came to give life and not just to survive or get by but abundant life. God’s idea of abundant life exceeds our ability to imagine (Eph. 3:20). This idea goes directly against the condition man is in. Life in Christ is never without; it is abundant all ways and all times.

It is easy to fail to understand this when we look through the eyes of man but as we look with God’s eyes He will reveal a life of power that defeats the meaninglessness of this life by giving life itself. There is hope, joy and peace even in the darkest times because the light of God is not overcome by the darkness (Jn 1:5) The life we have here is not really life as it is dead in sin but when we take hold of Christ by faith we gain the life that is in God. God is eternal, holy and righteous so the life he has is glorious and that is what God is offering man but we must pass through this life to enter the next. This means that for a season we suffer.

Christians are not immune from struggles and sufferings. We like all people face the same trials. As mentioned above it is these trials that can bring us low and even take our life if we give in to it. But God out of love has come to place his Spirit, the Spirit of Life, in us. Those who choose to believe and take hold of the truth of Christ are sealed by the Spirit of God. The Holy Spirit, himself comes and abides in us. It is this and faith in it that gives us the ability to not just get through life but thrive. Eph. 1:13 13  In Him you also trusted, after you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation; in whom also, having believed, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise,

It is the very person of God that enables true believers to rise up and thrive in the worst of situations. We do become more than overcomers as we take hold of God’s truth and walk with him in His power. In this there is need for consistent yielding of one’s life to God that the power of God may rest on us. Remember that it is disobedience that makes people remain in their sin and under death and darkness. Only when we daily look to the cross and recognize the finished work of Jesus to free man from sin and open the way by which man may walk intimately with God can the power to overcome show up in a life. We must always remember that apart from God we died and can find no true life. Trials and suffering will take us down but if we in faith hearing and believing God’s gospel die to ourselves we live for Christ. The life of Christ is life indeed for though beaten we stand firm, not knowing we fear not, hunted but never alone and never lost for God has promised that absolutely nothing can take us from His love (Rom. 8:35-39).

If you are struggling in any way or in the past struggled and have been marked by it turn today to Christ and seek Him with all your heart. If life seems pointless, all you do seems to have little meaning turn and repent of the life given to the world and ask God to lead you to the life He has for you. Know that no matter what comes your way He will be with you and give you strength in your hour of need. Yield your life totally today so that power of Christ may rest in you (2 Cor. 12:9-10).
