His Thinking

UCAN sharing: His Thinking

Scripture: Prov. 3:5-7

Let no one deceive himself. If anyone among you seems to be wise in this age, let him become a fool that he may become wise. 1 Cor. 3:18

When we examine how people make life decisions we see that for the most part they gather information and evaluate the choices and attempt to make an educated decision. This process includes experiences and education as well as biases that we may have. Often people simply use their feelings to select the best choice. This is how the world figures out whether to do this or go here or not. Our reliance is completely on man’s ability to reason out problems and arrive at a solution. Since the Age of Enlightenment man’s reasoning ability has been exalted as the way to solve all the world’s problems. God is no longer needed. Or is He?

The word of God states that the nature of man is contrary to God and will never obey God nor looks to please Him. Rom. 8:7-8

7  Because the carnal mind is enmity against God; for it is not subject to the law of God, nor indeed can be. 8  So then, those who are in the flesh cannot please God. If the carnal is so against God and leads man to sin how then can this mind understand the works of a holy, eternal and all mighty God. It is impossible but Christians throughout the world daily read the bible and then using their minds interpret it and call it God’s truth. This is foolishness and of no use yet many put their hope of walking with God in a holy way in their abilities to read the bible and understand the word of God. The carnal mind will never understand God’s mind (1 Cor. 2:14).

Jesus states in Jn. 10:10 that he has come to bring life and that life is abundant. He also says that the enemy comes to only kill, steal and destroy. God’s idea of abundant differs from what most of us would call abundant. He wants us to be changed to be more like Jesus so that we can be with Him forever. Eternal life is not about how much stuff we have or pleasure we enjoy but rather having the opportunity to know that Father and the Son intimately. God calls all his children to begin this living now by being spiritual and growing consistently. For this to happen a person can no longer depend on worldly knowledge to live by or allow worldly influences to lead them. We have to start living here as if God’s kingdom is real and this means thinking eternally and spiritually. Col. 3:2

2  Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth. 3  For you died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God.

Before we can begin to think the way God wants us to think we have to realize and accept that our lives here as worldly people ended the day we believed in Christ Jesus. We died with Christ so we can rise with Him as new creations (2 Cor. 5:17). We can’t keep living for this world expecting to go to God’s world. God calls us to prepare now and this means how we think must change. Rom 12:2

2  And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.

Note that this passage tells us not to be shaped in our thinking like the rest of the world. We are to think differently by allowing God to put his truth in us so we can discern what His will is and do it. Only in this way can a person become holy and acceptable to God.

God wants to pass His truth to us not just by us thinking independently but rather learning to trust him in all things and all ways in a relational way. In this way he can become intimate with us in our daily life. God’s love leads him to show concern for what we wear and eat and all we do. It is his desire to guide us to do his perfect will which will lead us to blessings and change the way we think. What an amazing effort God is willing to make for us to be with Him. He wants us to learn to depend on Him totally never trusting our own ways because those ways are carnal and lead away from relating to Him. Moses understood and live in this way. He spoke to God face to face and he didn’t try to figure out life on his own. In one incident the Passover had come and some men who were defiled by touching a dead body came to him wanting to participate. Moses didn’t know what to do or how to handle this situation so he tells them to just wait a minute while he talks to God and gets the answer. Numbers 9:5-10

V8 8  And Moses said to them, “Stand still, that I may hear what the LORD will command concerning you.” In the same way we are to go to God for all we do and need. He knows what is best and will tell us how to do. He has the master plan and his will is for us. God sees the end from the beginning so that there are no surprises or mistakes. When he gives us directions he also authorizes it so that we have all we need. Why then would a person not want to hear and obey? Simple answer is pride.

God out of love provides for a way in which we can truly be wise and navigate this life in a way that brings blessings. He gives us access to his wisdom that is far above the wisdom of man (1 Cor. 1:19-20). We are able to draw upon the knowledge and power of God to solve all our problems. But this blessing comes with certain conditions. It is here that so many Christians fail and miss out falling back on their own reasoning.

In Proverbs 3:5-7 we see how to go about not thinking carnally but spiritually so that God can lead us. The first thing is we have to do is stop trusting what we think. Not only is it against God it is also easily influenced by satan. We are more willing to follow our imperfect reasoning rather than trust God. We turn to the world’s ideas to help us solve our issues. When we are carnal the enemy can speak to us in lies that seem right and we can’t tell they are lies. This leads us away from God and in to trouble with sin and its consequences. But pride tells us we are smart and that God gave us a mind to think independently of him. All we get is deceived which means to be led astray by way of lies. Think about all the cults and how they get people to give them their money and lives and do all sorts of perverted and evil things all the time the people believe they are right. This happens by deception which is receiving a lie as truth. A deceived person no longer is open to seeking the truth since they believe they have it. They protect the lie as truth. To protect us God tell us not to trust our understanding. Make up your mind that you will not reason through life but choose instead to simply trust, listen and obey God.

The next step is to let God be God and you step out of the way. Many Christians play God. They pray and tell God what he should do. They come up with their own life answers and ask God to bless their ideas and make them happen. In short they are telling God that they are as able as he is to do life. This is pure foolishness but so many people do it and don’t see what they are doing. If God is the one who knows all and can do all then what can we possibly tell him? Nothing. So the next condition is one of humility, meaning we recognize at all times that God is supreme Lord of all. This is what it means to acknowledge or recognize that God is Lord and live by this truth. God has to be the Lord of our lives because he is the Lord of all and we are deceived to believe otherwise. God has right over all we do if we want to be with him. This means he decides everything and we simply trust, listen and obey. We have no rights if we want to be with him because he bought us out of slavery of sin and darkness with the price of his son’s life (1 Cor. 6:20). When we live by our own thinking we are denying the sacrifice Jesus gave and saying God is not God. Every Christian needs to decide whether God will be the working Lord of their lives.

When this decision is made God promises to act to empower your life with His wisdom and power. He alone can solve any problem. Nothing is too big for God to tackle. Our lives will be guided in a way that changes us to be more like Jesus daily so that when time ends we will be ready to spend eternity with him.

God loves us so much but he is not going to change his ways for us to keep living in sin. Only by his way we can know with confidence that the decisions we make are truth. In Christ we are no longer accessible to satan so deception can be avoid. It is truly living free and blessed.

Verse 7 is a warning because many will hear this and fail to yield to God. Pride and unbelief as well as fearing man more than God will keep many Christians from receiving the full experiencing of life God has for them. They will continue to trust in their own thinking and likely be deceived. God warns us not to wise in our own eyes but fear Him, meaning see Him as the magnificent God He is, trust him and allow His love to guide us from evil by simply listening and obeying in all things.

If you have been living by trusting in your own reasoning instead of asking God repent of this today and ask God to be your Lord. Ask Him to guide and help you see His way. You will be amazed at his response.
